How Canada votes on the rights of the Palestinian people.

December 8, 2015

To the Editor,

On November 29th, 2014, the organization, Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East [CJPME], released a statement about how Canada voted on six similar but slightly different United Nations [U.N.] resolutions. They were numbered as A/70/L.10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 21.

Resolution No. 10 concerned "the inalienable rights of Palestinians" and No. 11 was "about the continued support for the Division for Palestinian Rights at the U.N." About 100 countries voted in favour of these two resolutions. Canada, along with 7 other countries, voted against them: Israel, Mircronesia, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Paulu, the U.S. and Australia.

Resolution No. 12 pertained to "Special Information on the Question of Palestine at the U.N", No. 13 concerned "Peaceful settlement of the question of Palestine", No. 14 discussed the "U.N.'s position on the status of Jerusalem". The final resolution refers to "the Israeli settlements on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem and the Occupied Syrian Golan Heights".

About 100 countries voted in favour of resolutions Nos. 12 to 21. Countries voting against the above four resolutions were as follows: Canada, Israel, United States, Marshall Islands and Palau. (Note: Australia did not vote on the last four resolutions.)

It seems almost incomprehensible to me, and certainly to most Canadians, that Canada would vote against these U.N. resolutions. In 2014, Israel's Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, with Israel's modern and powerful military air and ground forces, invaded the Gaza area of Palestine, killing about 2,000 Palestinian citizens, including women and children. Thousands more were maimed or injured.

Who, in Canada, is responsible for voting with Israel and the U.S. for a war, [more like like a massacre] - obviously to deny the citizens of Palestine of their right to live in peace as democratic citizens in their own land?
