Medicine Hat chapter organizes for World Water Day

[ http://canadians.org/blog/medicine-hat- ... -water-day ]

March 14, 2017 - 4:46 pm

The Council of Canadians Medicine Hat chapter is organizing for World Water Day.

Medicine Hat is a city situated in southeast Alberta, about kilometres 295 east of Calgary and just 60 kilometres west of the Saskatchewan border. The name "Medicine Hat" is the English translation of Saamis – the Blackfoot word for the headdress worn by medicine men. The city of 63,000 people is located on the South Saskatchewan River.

The Medicine Hat News reports, "Local celebrations of World Water Week kick off Thursday [March 16] in Medicine Hat at the Market at Medalta starting at 7:30 p.m. This will be followed next Tuesday through Saturday [March 21 to March 25] with daily activities and events for the whole family which focus on the issue of water conservation and the importance of protecting the local watershed."

That article adds, "The main organizing body for World Water week celebration this year is the newly formed Medicine Hat Chapter of the Council of Canadians (COC). COC chair David Condon says his organization will be working with SEAWA, the city, the Grasslands Naturalists and the library to draw attention to the issue of water wastage."

Condon notes, "The reason World Water Day was started was to raise awareness and make people think about their relationship to water, and the fact that we take so much for granted while other people either have no access to clean water, or they have to walk long distances to get it."

And he adds, “You have large transnational corporations like Nestle, who buy a lot of water very cheaply, bottle it and sell it back to us. We want people to think about that, and maybe look a little more closely at their own relationship to water. We also want to talk to people about the importance of the public water utility we have here in Medicine Hat, and how good our water is.”

The Medicine Hat chapter was formed on November 2, 2016. Winnipeg-based Council of Canadians organizer Brigette DePape was at that founding meeting. She told us at that time that the chapter was already interested in organizing for World Water Day.

Nineteen Council of Canadians chapters are organizing across the country this year for World Water Day. Among the activities, four chapters will be screening Bottled Life, three chapters will be tabling at various locations, two chapters will be screening Tapped, and two chapters will be presenting to their city council on becoming a blue community.

Chilliwack chapter to co-host provincial all-candidates meeting on World Water Day

[ http://canadians.org/blog/chilliwack-ch ... -water-day ]

March 16, 2017 - 6:55 am

The Council of Canadians Chilliwack chapter will be co-hosting a provincial election all-candidates meeting on World Water Day.

The promotion for the event says, "In honour of the United Nations World Water Day we are co-hosting the first all-candidates meeting of the upcoming BC Provincial General Election for the ridings of Chilliwack and Chilliwack-Kent. The WaterWealth Project, the Chilliwack Chapter of the Council of Canadians, The Canadian Fresh Water Alliance and Friends of the Camp/Hope Slough are organizing this opportunity for us to explore some of the issues concerning water together."

And it adds, "We are very pleased that two highly respected local indigenous leaders have agreed to co-moderate the event. Shirley Ann Hardman is the Senior Advisor on Indigenous Affairs, Office of the Vice Provost, University of the Fraser Valley. Larry Commodore is a former Soowahlie Chief, and a community advisor to the WaterWealth Project."

As noted on the Elections BC website, the election is scheduled to be officially called on April 11 with voting taking place on May 9.

One issue that could come up at the all-candidates meeting is Nestle bottled water-takings and the 890,000 barrel per day Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain pipeline. WaterWealth recently reported, "Nestle asked for and got a route change to move the new pipeline further from their wells. The old pipe may also get moved in that section. Chilliwack residents have been asking for the route to be moved off the aquifer we get our water from. Does Nestle have some pull that we don't?"

Yesterday, a market-based poll projected that the Liberals would win 42 seats on election night, that the NDP would win 40, and the Green Party 5 seats.

And while the undecided vote is high at 25 per cent, the CBC has reported, "The NDP has been polling at between 37 and 39 per cent over the last three polls, compared to a range of 33 to 37 per cent for the Liberals, 13 to 17 per cent for the Greens and 10 to 13 per cent for the B.C. Conservatives."

South Niagara chapter tables at Farmer's Market for World Water Day

[ http://canadians.org/blog/south-niagara ... -water-day ]

March 19, 2017 - 4:18 pm

The Council of Canadians South Niagara chapter tabled at the St. Catharines Farmer's Market yesterday.

Chapter activist Fiona McMurran tells us, "We were there from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. Timothy’s visual presentation aided him, Joanne and I fielded questions on bottled water issues, Gary used his display on the Great Lakes to prompt discussion about threats to our inland waters, and Chris made all the arrangements with the city and provided us with the triptych. All in all, quite a success!"

Bottled water

The Council of Canadians have been encouraging people across the country to comment on bottled water takings in Ontario. To tell Ontario Premier Wynne that Nestle and bottled water have to go, please click on this online action alert. [ https://secure.canadians.org/ea-action/ ... n.id=65375 ]

To join the 48,315 people who have signed our pledge to boycott Nestle, please click here:

Great Lakes

There are numerous threats to the Great Lakes, including now US President Donald Trump. Last week, he proposed the elimination of all funding to clean-up the Great Lakes. The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative was launched by President Barack Obama in 2009 and has invested more than $1.3 billion to clean up toxic pollution, reduce runoff from cities and farms, restore habitat and fight invasive species. The Council of Canadians is calling on the Canadian environment minister to step up by both spending $500 million this year on cleaning up the lakes as well as rejecting a proposed nuclear waste dump on the shores of Lake Huron. For more on both of those demands, please click here: [ http://canadians.org/blog/environment-m ... reat-lakes ]

The South Niagara chapter took these actions as part of World Water Day.

The Montreal, Brandon/Westman, Centre Wellington, Chilliwack, Cowichan Valley, Edmonton, Guelph, Kent County, Kitchener-Waterloo, Ottawa, Medicine Hat, Northumberland, Peterborough-Kawarthas, Prince Albert, South Shore, Sudbury, Whitehorse and Windsor-Essex are also taking action between March 2 and April 3 to mark World Water Day.

Those actions include: presenting to municipal councils to become a blue community, screening the films Bottled Life, Water on the Table and Above All Else, organizing a provincial all-candidates meeting on water, taking a group-selfie in front of a local river, holding public forums, tabling, holding discussions, organizing a tap water versus bottled water taste test, mobilizing a cross-border rally, and more.

Chapters have also been photographing Nestle bottled water labels across the country to show how far bottled water is trucked outside of the watershed where it was extracted. You can read more about that here: [ http://canadians.org/blog/chapters-send ... ss-country ]

Medicine Hat chapter challenges bottled water with plastic water bottle sculpture

[ http://canadians.org/blog/medicine-hat- ... -sculpture ]

March 20, 2017 - 8:53 pm

The Council of Canadians Medicine Hat chapter has created a sculpture made out of plastic water bottles to challenge bottled water.

Chapter activist Jessica Plattner tells us, "We used it as a canopy for the table where people signed a pledge to not use single-use plastic water bottles, and had it set up at a local farmers/craft market for Bottled Water Free Day. Now it is at the public library as part of the World Water Day display."

The Canadian Press has reported, "The U.S. Container Recycling Institute estimates about 30 million plastic water bottles are thrown away, and not put into recycling containers, every day. The Polaris Institute warns that [in Canada] many plastic bottles end up in landfills 'or worse, as litter in forests, lakes and oceans' [and] estimates only 14 per cent of plastic water bottles get recycled in Ontario."

Plattner says the bottles for the sculpture came from the recycling centre in Medicine Hat - which often processes as many as 20,000 bottles in a single day.

The Medicine Hat, Brandon/Westman, Edmonton, Prince Albert, Chilliwack, Cowichan Valley, Whitehorse, Montreal, Guelph, Centre Wellington, Guelph, Kitchener-Waterloo, Ottawa, Northumberland, Peterborough-Kawarthas, South Niagara, Sudbury, Windsor-Essex, South Shore, and Kent County chapters are all taking action between March 2 and April 3 to mark World Water Day.

March 22, 2017 - 9:20 pm

The Council of Canadians Windsor-Essex chapter and Windsor on Watch held a cross-border rally today to mark World Water Day.

Chapter activist Doug Hayes tell us, "We had an opening and blessing by [Mohawk Elder] Mona Stonefish followed by Peggy Case who is with Michigan Citizens for Water Conservation. Then [chapter activist] Randy Emerson spoke about oil and pipelines. There were a few other speakers who raised key issues."

Twenty-four Council of Canadians chapters are participating in World Water Day actions across the country this year.

March 23, 2017 - 10:59 am

The Council of Canadians Quinte chapter had an information table at the Belleville Library for World Water Day yesterday.

The chapter tells us, "There was a steady stream of people (young and old) stopping at our table from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. We had some good discussions and 5 people signed up as being interested in joining our Water Group. We also had an invitation from Loyola Community Learning Centre to speak to a group of immigrants to explain about the safety and importance of drinking tap water."

The chapter worked in shifts to keep the table staffed throughout the day.

Twenty-four Council of Canadians chapters participated in World Water Day actions across the country this year.

[ http://canadians.org/blog/south-shore-c ... -water-day ]

March 23, 2017 - 3:01 pm

The Council of Canadians South Shore chapter screened the documentary Water on the Table on World Water Day in Mahone Bay.

The chapter tells us, "More than 50 people came out to watch the film. The evening opened with a member of the local Mi’kmaq community welcoming everyone to unceded Mi’kmaq territory. During the break, participants had a chance to take part in a water taste test (town water, rural well water, bottled water), make a tap water pledge, pick up a chart to track home water usage, and check out displays from Council of Canadians, CUPE and CPONS (Campaign to Protect Offshore Nova Scotia)."

The chapter adds, "The South Shore Raging Grannies brought everyone back into the room with three songs (including What Shall We Do With Nestle Water?). The evening concluded with a spirited and wide-ranging discussion. Topics included water as a human right, Canada’s global responsibility, a critique of Nestle's corporate agenda, and how to engage young people in this important topic."

Kent County chapter highlights forestry and watersheds to mark World Water Day

[ http://canadians.org/blog/kent-county-c ... -water-day ]

April 3, 2017 - 6:54 am

The Council of Canadians Kent County chapter marked World Water Day with an event drawing attention to the interconnectedness between forests and watersheds.

Their media release noted, "On March 29th, the Kent chapter will host an evening of discovery, knowledge-sharing, and discussion about the relationship between water and forestry management at Bonar Law High School in Rexton. Doors open at 6:30 pm for viewing of displays from the Richibucto Watershed Association, Elsipogtog’s Kopit Lodge, and local photographers' beautiful nature photos of our area."

Their media release then adds, "At 7:00 pm, presentations begin with drumming and a Water Song from Kopit Lodge water protector, Lorraine Clair. Scientist Frank Johnston, a member of the Conservation Council of New Brunswick's Board of Directors, will give a presentation regarding clearcuts. From the Restigouche River Watershed Management Council, David LeBlanc or his colleague Carole-Anne Gillis, will speak about the impacts of our forestry practices on watersheds."

Chapter activist Debbie Hopper highlights, “In recent years, residents of Kent County united to protect our water against the irreversible damage caused by shale gas fracking. We remain vigilant on that issue, but we are also taking aim at the harm done to our water by clearcutting and the use of chemicals such as glyphosate-based herbicides. Frank Johnston's shocking aerial photographs provide a clear depiction of our shrinking forests. Current provincial policies harm streams and rivers within the forests in a multitude of ways. Everything depends on the water.”

In her book Boiling Point: Government Neglect, Corporate Abuse, and Canada's Water Crisis, Council of Canadians chairperson Maude Barlow writes, "If we continue to destroy and endanger Canada's forests and wetlands, the burden on our already stressed waterways will grow. Protecting forests means also protecting wetlands, and all levels of government, First Nations and communities must work together to protect, restore and rejuvenate the damaged forests and wetlands of Canada."

Twenty-eight chapters participated in World Water Day actions this year. Those actions included: a cross-border rally, presenting to municipal councils to become a blue community, film screenings, organizing a provincial all-candidates meeting on water, taking a group-selfie in front of a local river, holding public forums, tabling, holding discussions, organizing a tap water versus bottled water taste test, and more.
