Wins!

The Guelph Chapter helped block a proposed glass factory in the Guelph-Eramosa area that would have drawn 1.6 million litres of water a day for its operations. Guelph City Council voted in favour of motion rejecting the proposal! [ https://www.guelphtoday.com/local-news/ ... tos-987444 ]

The South Shore Chapter celebrated the Municipality of Shelburne's decision to write letters to the federal Ministers of Environment, Natural Resources, and Fisheries and Oceans to express concerns about BP drilling for oil and gas offshore of Nova Scotia.

Climate Justice

Several chapters, including the Northwest Territories [ https://www.myyellowknifenow.com/30866/ ... es-to-yzf/ ], Hamilton, Ottawa and Quinte, hosted or attended town halls and screenings of the anti-KM film Directly Affected: Pipeline Under Pressure.

The Comox Valley Chapter joined 50 environmental, Indigenous, human rights and faith organizations endorsing a letter to B.C. Premier John Horgan asking the province to enact a Liability for Climate-Related Harm Act. [ https://canadians.org/blog/making-big-o ... roposed-bc ]

The Victoria Chapter paddled with over 100 other boats in solidarity with Coast Salish communities to #ProtectTheInlet from Kinder Morgan. [ https://twitter.com/hashtag/protectthei ... t&src=hash ]

The Regina Chapter issued a press release denouncing Premier Moe's continued support for oil pipelines.

The Thunder Bay Chapter supported a Pop-up Postcard Factory, sending messages opposing the Kinder Morgan buyout to MPs.

Water

The Victoria, Comox Valley, Powell River, Nelson, Kelowna and Kamloops chapters hosted stops on the Damning the Peace Tour, featuring author Wendy Holm, who spoke about the many reasons why the multi-billion Site C dam project should be stopped.

The North West Territories Chapter stood in solidarity with Nova Scotians, demanding a full environmental review for the proposed Kraft pulp mill effluent pipe in Abercrombie.

The Inverness, North Shore, South Shore and PEI chapters [ https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/ ... protest-n/ ] were at the massive #NoPipe rally in Pictou speaking out about the Kraft pulp mill effluent pipe and the proposal to pipe treated effluent, which still contains many hazardous substances, directly into the Northumberland Strait.

Solidarity

Chapter activists are participating in the Muskrat Falls Solidarity Chain Fast.

The Campbell River, Victoria and Kamloops Chapter members published an editorial in the Times Colomnist calling for a publicly-owned replacement for Grey Hound bus services. [ http://www.timescolonist.com/opinion/op ... 1.23365114 ]

The Red Deer chapter held their annual meeting to talk about the year’s successes and look ahead to how we can work together and strengthen the chapter’s future work for social justice.

The North Shore Chapter spoke out against the Nova Scotia government's close relationship with mining companies.

London Chapter member Margo Does [ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgHB0LFycWw ] shared her original song, "Border Babies" about the family separations that are happening at the U.S.-Mexico border.

The Moncton Chapter raised concerns about a plan to cut down 16 tress in Aberdeen Park

The PEI Chapter challenged racism in a letter to the editor [ http://www.theguardian.pe.ca/news/islan ... on-227292/ ], speaking out against racist anti-immigration flyers that have appeared in local mailboxes

Thank you to our chapters for a week of impressive actions, articles, and solidarity across the country. Here are just some of the highlights:


Water

Through the coalition Moncton H20, the Moncton Chapter campaigned to see their municipal water service brought back into public hands. The chapter also highlighted the problem of blue-green algae in local waterways and across the country. [ https://canadians.org/blog/moncton-h2o- ... -web-tools ]

The Quinte Chapter organized to have the “Quench Buggy” – a mobile water station providing drinking fountains and refill stations to top up personal water containers – at the PEC Women’s Institute Art and Craft Show in Picton.

Many chapter shared articles and actions supporting the ongoing fight against the Site C dam disaster.


Solidarity

The Victoria Chapter celebrated the removal of Sir John A. Macdonald’s statue from the B.C. legislature.

The South Shore Chapter helped promote Sustainable Northern Nova Scotia (SUNNS), an organization that works to ensure environmentally sustainable, locally-driven economic and community development in northern Nova Scotia.

The Fredericton Chapter celebrated the full protection of the Grand Manan bird sanctuary.

Climate Justice

The Victoria and NWT chapters highlighted BC’s export of natural gas to the Alberta Tar Sands.

Chapters continued to share stories and actions opposing the Kinder Morgan Pipeline and Trudeau’s buyout, including Kamloops, Victoria, Northwest Territories, Guelph, Comox Valley, Quinte, Hamilton, Montreal, and PEI.

The Edmonton Chapter put out a call for steering committee members for their work with Pesticide Free Edmonton and Pesticide Free Alberta, and promoted Wellspring, a 2018 Edmonton Fringe Festival play about fracking.

Many chapter activists participated in the Stop KM Buyout webinar on August 8.

Upcoming

The Ottawa Chapter shared the upcoming book launch of "Corporatizing Canada" on Sept. 19. [ https://www.facebook.com/events/292809708148512/ ]

Chapter activists across the country were hard at work again this week, with several impressive events and lots of planning for a busy fall!

Water

The Guelph Chapter enjoyed an excellent turnout – more than 400 people – to their event, Aquifers Under Siege - What happens when the wells run dry? with Maude Barlow.

Chapter activists in Nova Scotia have been planning for the Protect Offshore Nova Scotia events, October 2-4 in Halifax and Mahone Bay.

The South Shore Chapter celebrated a win in their Campaign to Protect Offshore Nova Scotia, as Shelburne Mayor Karen Mattatal called for a provincial inquiry into offshore drilling.

Climate

The London Chapter published politcal candidate Carol Dyck’s statement from the September 8 Rise Up rally about the need for immediate action on climate change, and many other chapters continued to celebrate the success of the Rise Up day of action.

Trade

The Chilliwack Chapter visited a local 6-generation family dairy farm to learn firsthand about the Canadian Dairy Board and threats to the industry from NAFTA negotiations.

Democracy

The Fredericton Chapter held a very successful all candidates meeting on September 11, with over 230 people and all 5 candidates in attendance. The chapter followed up with a series of shareable memes outlining key election issues in New Brunswick.

The Kamloops Chapter continued to share videos of local candidates promoting their September 22 all-candidates meeting.

The Comox Valley Chapter attended an information session on B.C.'s upcoming referendum on electoral reform.

The London Chapter analyzed recent municipal election results in light of the new Ranked Ballot system being used in London.

Many chapters shared stories and actions about the state of our democracy – and Doug Ford's abuse of power in particular – including Comox Valley, Quinte, Guelph, Ottawa and Hamilton.

Solidarity

The Peterborough Chapter organized their second successful trip to the Curve Lake First Nations Pow Wow, with 40 people taking the bus and several cars in addition.

The Northwest Territories Chapter will be handing out UNDRIP booklets from Amnesty International to local politicians.

Upcoming

The Mid-Island Chapter will be meeting on September 18.

The Comox Valley Chapter is co-sponsoring the Comox Valley Sustainability Forum on September 19.

The Ottawa Chapter shared the upcoming book launch of Corporatizing Canada, on September 19.

The Kamloops Chapter will be hosting an all candidates meeting on September 22 at the Kamloops Farmers’ Market.

The London Chapter is hosting a talk on this year’s Freedom Flotilla, on September 26.

The Winnipeg Chapter put out the call for billets in anticipation of the regional chapter meetings, September 28-30.

Protect Offshore Nova Scotia events will be taking place in Halifax and Mahone Bay, October 2-4.

The Kamloops Chapter is co-sponsoring a public forum on pubic health care, October 11.

The London Chapter will be attending at anti-hate rally in response to a planned march by anti-immigrant extremists on October 13.

The London Chapter will be going to the Protect Public Healthcare Rally at Queen’s Park in Toronto on October 23.

CPONS is co-sponsoring the Creating Offshore Resistance Everywhere events in Halifax and Mahone Bay, October 2-4.

Chapters have been working hard for social justice: hosting events, protesting against government abuse and corporate power, and crafting questions for candidates in elections across the country!


Energy and Climate

Marilyn Keddy of the South Shore Chapter spoke at the SWNS Lobster Forum in Yarmouth on Sept. 19 about threats from offshore drilling Nova Scotia

The South Shore Chapter celebrated the District of Shelburne and the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg voting for a "full and independent public inquiry into the pros and cons of oil industry exploration" offshore Nova Scotia.

Nova Scotia chapter activists and regional staff protested outside and inside the G7 Oceans Summit in Halifax

The Comox Valley chapter co-hosted the 2nd Sustainability Forum on September 19. The chapter also posted the presentations given during the forum.

Numerous chapters posted articles about Kinder Morgan pipeline and the renewed NEB environmental review of the pipeline project, including the Northwest Territories, Kamloops, Mid-island and Hamilton.



Democracy

Ontario-based Council of Canadians chapter activists made phone calls to Ontario Progressive Conservative Party supporters, asking them to stop giving money to Doug Ford and his party in light of their harmful agenda.

The Kamloops Chapter hosted an all-candidates forum at the Kamloops Farmers' Market on Saturday, Sept. 22.

The Comox Valley Chapter published a list of questions about the environment and sustainability for candidates in the upcoming municipal elections. The chapter also wrote about the advantages of proportional representation, in anticipation of the B.C. referendum on electoral reform.

The Quinte Chapter protested against Doug Ford’s agenda and abuse of power outside Conservative MPP Todd Smith’s office in Belleville.

The Fredericton Chapter shared information and questions about important local issues for candidates in the September 24 provincial election.

The Mid Island Chapter attended the VIU Student Union’s political engagement forum featuring Seth Klein, Executive Director of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives on September 25.

The London Chapter posted a series of questions on water for local municipal candidates.


Water

The Toronto Chapter attended the Water Docs Outdoor Film Screening: Beyond Crisis, on September 22.



Solidarity

Several chapters also posted about the rushed debate and vote on Bill C-79 and the CPTPP, including Comox Valley, Northwest Territories, Guelph and Hamilton.

The Comox Valley Chapter shared the City of Courtenay’s Urban Forest Strategy on-line consultation.

The Ottawa Chapter attended the Rally for Kashechewan on Parliament Hill, September 17.

The Ottawa Chapter attended the launch of Corporatizing Canada, on September 19.

The London Chapter supported this year’s Take Back the Night rally on September 20th – co-chair David Heap organized an allies’ solidarity event.

The London Chapter hosted a talk on this year’s Freedom Flotilla, on September 26. The talk featured three local activist who were involved in the effort, including London Chapter co-chair David Heap.

The Edmonton Chapter participated in the Friends of Medicare fundraiser Time to Care About Health Care! on September 27.

Jim Elliott, the chairperson for the Regina Chapter, wrote about Justice For Our Stolen Children camp and the need to provide real support for Indigenous children, families and communities in Saskatchewan.

Once again this week, Council of Canadians Chapters were active in communities across the country, hosting events and coordinating actions in the name of democracy, social and environmental justice, and Indigenous solidarity. Here are some highlights:


Democracy

The Ottawa Chapter co-hosted an All Candidates debate for Rideau Vanier Ward city councillor on October 8.

The Guelph Chapter hosted a very successful Mayoral Debate at Guelph City Hall on October 10. The Chapter is continuing their "GET OUT AND VOTE" campaign for the upcoming municipal elections.

The Northwest Territories Chapter wrote an open letter to MP Michael McLeod requesting a public meeting to discuss pressing issues, which he has so far refused to do.

Community newspaper The Millstone published a story on the Mississippi Mills, Ontario Chapter's questionnaire for local municipal candidates.

Chapters in B.C. and beyond talked about the importance of proportional representation, including Comox Valley, Kamloops, Quinte and Guelph.


Energy and Climate

Many of our chapters reacted with frustration and determination – but not surprise – to the recent UN climate change report, including Comox Valley, Quinte, Ottawa, London, Montreal, PEI, South Shore, Fredericton, and Guelph.

And in the face this climate crisis, chapters continue to campaign against destructive energy projects like LNG, the Site C dam, and the proposed Teck mine in the tar sands, including Thunder Bay, Victoria and Northwest Territories.


Water

The Comox Valley Chapter co-sponsored a community water forum on October 10, featuring Rosie Simms, a Water Law and Policy Research Coordinator with the Polis Project, Bruce Gibbons, founder of the Merville Water Guardians, and a member of the Cowichan Water Board.

The Northwest Territories Chapter co-sponsored a presentation by Wendy Holm, author of Damming the Peace: The Hidden Costs of the Site C Dam, on October 12.


Solidarity

On October 13, the Fredericton Chapter visited the Wolastoq Mothers & Grandmothers at the proposed Sisson Mine site, helping with camp maintenance and the continuing construction of a second dwelling to be completed soon.

Chapters across the country expressed solidarity with First Nations after the Supreme Court of Canada’s ruling on the duty to consult, including Mid Island, Northwest Territories, Quinte, Hamilton, Windsor-Essex, PEI, South Shore, Fredericton, Ottawa, and Guelph.

The Kamloops Chapter co-sponsored a public forum on pubic health care on October 11.

The London Chapter attended an anti-hate rally in response to a march by anti-immigrant extremists on October 13.

The Mid Island Chapter attended the Forests Activism Training Weekend, Oct 13 and 14.


Upcoming

The London Chapter will be co-hosting the London stop of the Corporatizing Canada book launch on October 17.

The Hamilton Chapter is co-hosting a "Poverty and Inequality in Hamilton" forum October 17.

The PEI Chapter is hosting a conflict resolution workshop, Paul Hutchinson: Living Well With Difference, on October 19.

The London and Kitchener-Waterloo chapters have helped to organize buses to the Protect Public Healthcare Rally at Queen’s Park in Toronto on October 23, and will joined by the Guelph Chapter.

The Quinte Chapter is hosting Joyce Nelson, author of Beyond Banksters: Resisting the New Feudalism in Picton on October 24.

The Comox Valley Chapter will be hosting an interactive evening on understanding electoral reform, featuring Barb Berger from Fair Vote Comox Valley on October 27.

The Toronto Chapter is co-presenting the film Guardian at the 19th Annual Planet in Focus Environmental Film Festival on October 27.

The Ottawa Chapter shared the upcoming Muskrat Falls Parliament Hill Direct Action: See Their Faces on October 29.

The Montreal Chapter is co-hosting the Montreal Corporatizing Canada Book Launch on October 29.

The London Chapter’s AGM will be held on November 21. The chapter invited nominations for steering committee members, and by-law amendments.

Thanks to all our chapters for their hard work and determination, mobilizing across the country for social and environmental justice.

Climate and Energy:

Chapters across the country delivered copies of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report to their local MPs on October 24, including Northwest Territories, London, Thunder Bay, Guelph, Ottawa, Montreal, Campbell River and South Shore.

The Northwest Territories Chapter published a debrief of the recent visit by anti-Site C activist Wendy Holmes. The chapter also sent a letter to NWT leaders and activists calling for abandonment of the dangerous Site C dam.

The Hamilton Chapter was out with Hamilton350.org at a climate action rally on October 20.

The South Shore Chapter brought their Offshore Drilling – Not Worth the Risk campaign to a funding announcement in Lunenburg by the federal fisheries minister and local MP Bernadette Jordon on October 22.

The Saint John’s Chapter published the results of its plastic bag survey from local grocery stores, finding that almost 90% of shoppers still use single-use plastic bags.

Water:

The London Chapter hosted a successful stop of the Corporatizing Canada book launch, featuring Emma Lui and Edward George on October 17. The chapter also shared the song “Hands Off Our Water” by Margo Does, which she sang at the event.

The Guelph Chapter joined the Concerned Residents Coalition meeting about James Dick Construction Ltd's application for a license for the Hidden Quarry.

The Toronto Chapter co-presented the film Guardian at the 19th Annual Planet in Focus Environmental Film Festival on October 27.

Several chapters shared articles and petitions calling for boycotts of Nestlé’s water and Halloween candy, including Red Deer, Quinte, Guelph, Thunder Bay, Ottawa, Montreal, Moncton, Mid island, and PEI.

Democracy:

The Delta-Richmond Chapter hosted an information event on Proportional Representation with guest speakers from Fair Vote Canada and Dogwood Initiative on October 16.

The Kamloops Chapter went to a discussion of proportional representation by Port Coquitlam MLA Mike Farnworth on October 19.

The Guelph Chapter pushed their "GET OUT AND VOTE" campaign for the final week before municipal elections.

The Comox Valley Chapter had a full house at their interactive evening on understanding electoral reform, featuring Barb Berger from Fair Vote Comox Valley on October 27. The chapter joined Fair Vote Comox Valley at their Rally at the Bridge, the day before.

The PEI Chapter hosted a conflict resolution workshop, Paul Hutchinson: Living Well With Difference, on October 19.

The Edmonton Chapter went to Left, Right: Marching to the Beat of Imperial Canada on October 22.

The Peterborough, Halton, Kitchener-Waterloo, Hamilton, Guelph and London chapters went to the Protect Public Healthcare Rally at Queen’s Park in Toronto on October 23.

The Quinte Chapter hosted Joyce Nelson, author of Beyond Banksters: Resisting the New Feudalism in Picton on October 24.

The Edmonton Chapter attended the University of Alberta’s Sustainability Awareness Week, October 22-27.

The Ottawa Chapter shared the upcoming Muskrat Falls Parliament Hill Direct Action: See Their Faces on October 29.

The Montreal Chapter is co-hosting the Montreal Corporatizing Canada Book Launch on October 29.

The Hamilton Chapter is hosting Send in the Marines! An evening with Gordon Laxer on October 30.

The PEI Chapter will be attending the People's Forum on Just Trade and Development, hosted by Trade Justice PEI on November 3.

The South Shore Chapter is co-hosting a screening of the award-winning documentary film Burned – Are Trees the New Coal, about the recent rise of the global biomass industry and its impacts on forests and the atmosphere, on November 9.

The Quinte Chapter is hosting Emma Lui at the Picton Town Hall as part of the Corporatizing Canada Book Launch on November 14.

The London Chapter’s AGM will be held on November 21, followed by at talk by Brent Patterson, What Is to Be Done? Navigating the Political Moment.

The Guelph, Hamilton and Brant chapters are looking forward to the event “Putting a Stop to Nestle” on November 24.
