EXCERPT: "The federal government announced on January 23, 2026, it would no longer fund agricultural research and development centres at Guelph, Ont., Quebec City, and Lacombe, Alta. Also slated for closure are satellite research farms at Nappan, N.S., Scott, Sask., Indian Head, Sask. and Portage la Prairie, Man. In Saskatchewan staff cuts are expected for Saskatoon, Melfort, Regina and Swift Current.

These publicly funded Saskatchewan research sites have worked for decades to provide cropping system and seed development research, and are important economic drivers of their communities. While mainly involved in research related to cereals, oilseeds, and pulse crops, the Saskatchewan centres have also conducted work on forage crops and rangeland regeneration along with other research beneficial to grasslands and the Prairie ecosystem. This includes Swift Current’s Organic and Regenerative Agriculture Program focusing on low input and organic agricultural techniques including interplanting and biocontrol of plant pathogens."
