Saskatchewan has set out to double the irrigable land in the province by investing more than $4 billion toward a generational project at Lake Diefenbaker.

The project — which is expected to be completed in 10 years — will be built over three phases and will cost around $4 billion, the government of Saskatchewan says.

Premier Scott Moe said Thursday that the project “will be a massive step in completing the goals” the government has set out to grow the province by 2030.

Irrigation project money could be better spent

As a friend rightly put it, am I the only one to be blind-sided by this “vote-getter” 20th century irrigation project?

With the pandemic and restarting the economy, if we had $4 billion to transition and build a sustainable, resilient economy, would Saskatchewan residents be pushing for this one grandiose project?

We need a just transition for oil and gas workers so they are going to have jobs in the future in their communities.

We have heard many calls for more mental health supports for northern Saskatchewan.

We have heard calls for water infrastructure and schools for our Indigenous brothers and sisters.

Residents want to build homegrown renewable energy programs and a resilient future.

We need to be supporting our municipalities who have lost millions of dollars in revenue.

We have seen calls for robust increases for social programs, addicted individuals and the homeless.

This premier and Sask. Party government have already wasted money in a $2-billion bypass, a $1.5-billion carbon capture and storage facility, foreign trade offices, a nuclear secretariat and fighting a progressive carbon tax. They have cut supports for education and healthcare.

As Dorothy said when she met the Wizard of Oz, let’s not get dazzled by the smoke and mirrors and pull back the curtain on this show. We need to be supporting the health and well-being of Saskatchewan residents and protecting the planet and our children’s future first.
