EXCERPT: "There was general agreement among all workgroups that the industrialization of livestock production over the past three decades has not been accompanied by commensurate modernization of regulations to protect the health of the public, or natural public-trust resources, particularly in the United States. Even though the European Union has made greater strides, there is room for improvements in the control of air and water pollutants from CAFOs in Europe as well as the United States. Expansion of large CAFOs into central and eastern Europe and South America is occurring without attention to lessons learned from health and environmental problems in the United States. and western Europe. Major concerns exist over the role of intensive livestock production in influenza outbreaks and the emergence of antibiotic resistant organisms. Recent attention to these risks among the scientific community, the public, and governments is encouraging."
