Following a thorough assessment of several Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technologies, SaskPower has selected the GE-Hitachi BWRX-300 for potential deployment in Saskatchewan in the mid-2030s.

“This is an important milestone as Saskatchewan works towards a cleaner, more sustainable future,” said Don Morgan, Minister responsible for SaskPower. “Today’s announcement further acts on the Saskatchewan Growth Plan goal of advancing potential development of zero-emission small modular reactor technology.” . . . . .

Province bullish on nuclear power, but environmental groups have concerns

Ann Coxworth, Saskatchewan Environmental Society June 29, 2022

Though the first of them may be a long way from being built, there is some excitement in Saskatchewan about the prospect of small modular reactors (SMR) coming to the province. One group, however, wants to temper that excitement.

As the Saskatchewan government touts SMRs as a path toward generating green energy, the Saskatchewan Environmental Society has some concerns. They don’t think these reactors will be the safest or cheapest way forward.

“We think there are much better alternatives,” said Ann Coxworth, a researcher with the Saskatchewan Environmental Society. “There are a number of problems with nuclear reactors of any form. We have cheaper, safer alternatives that would enable us to cut down our greenhouse gas emissions substantially.”

According to Coxworth, there are two main concerns with using nuclear reactors to generate power. The most pressing of the two is what to do with the waste produced by these reactors and what harm that waste can cause. After all, nuclear waste can remain hazardous for tens of thousands of years. . . . . .

RE: SaskPower Selects the GE-Hitachi BWRX-300 Small Modular Reactor Technology for Potential Deployment in Saskatchewan

In response to the recent news that SaskPower has ‘selected’ its SMR of choice to meet the challenge of the climate crisis, it is critical to note two glaring items.

One, all of the slick jargon about this so-called technology means nothing to most people. One has to read more than half-way through the press release before it is revealed, finally, that they are talking about using small modular ‘nuclear’ reactors (the word ‘nuclear’ is always withheld with these things), to produce our electricity.

Second, nuclear energy is NOT the solution to climate change.

Nuclear energy is a needless, dangerous, dirty, obscenely expensive distraction from employing ‘political will’ and ‘common sense’ to use truly clean, truly safe, readily available and relatively inexpensive renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and geothermal to truly meet the climate crisis.

Sadly, one must wonder what goes through the minds of people who make decisions such as this.
