Nuclear Weapons – Iran, Uranium Enrichment, and MAD-ness (Mutually Assured Destruction)

Friends and Colleagues -
This week is the 81st anniversary of the only use to date of atomic weapons targeting human beings. On August 6, 1945, the city of Hiroshima was incinerated with a single bomb made of highly enriched uranium,. Three days later, the city of Nagasaki suffered a similar fate, from a single bomb made of plutonium. In each case, about 100,000 men women and children were killed with many thousands suffering health consequences for decades following the bombings.
The current war launched on Iran by the USA and Israel has highlighted the role of uranium enrichment in spreading nuclear weapons capabilities. As a result, the entire subject of nuclear armageddon and nuclear weapons proliferation has managed to attract the attention of people around the world, including youngsters and politicians who seldom take the time to reflect on these somber subjects.
The threat of nuclear war, which seemed to be receding in recent decades, is now clearly greater than it has been at any time since the cold war MAD-ness of Mutually Assured Destruction. The difference is that in the coming years we could wake up and find Washington – or Moscow or Paris or Beijing – gone, and not even know who did it.
The following two interviews are focussed on Iran, uranium enrichment and nuclear weapons. In them, issues threatening not only the future of the human race but perhaps even the fate of the four-billion-year evolution of life on Earth are discussed….
