Is a West-East Oil Pipeline Now a Bygone Idea?

By Paul Rowan Brian - December 4, 2025 - The Epoch Times

EXCERPT: "As the recently signed energy deal between Alberta and Ottawa paves the way for a potential oil pipeline to the West Coast, and amid talk of reviving the Keystone XL pipeline, the prospect of a West-to-East pipeline has taken a back seat in public discourse.

Some still remain hopeful, however, that the cancellation of TC Energy’s Energy East pipeline proposal eight years ago hasn’t erased the possibility of the project’s revival, particularly as Ottawa focuses on making Canada an “energy superpower” that is less reliant on the United States.

The premiers of Alberta and Nova Scotia called for the Energy East pipeline to be revived this past January, echoed by comments from former Energy Minister Jonathan Wilkinson in February that Canada “should discuss the possibility of an oil pipeline to Eastern Canada” to boost energy security and diversify trade.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has supported the concept of a West-East pipeline in principle, saying it would go forward if there was “nationwide consensus.” Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is also pushing for the idea.
The focus since spring, however, has been on shipping oil from Alberta to the West Coast. It was announced on Nov. 27 that Alberta and the federal government have signed a memorandum of understanding on sweeping energy policy changes, including removing some Trudeau-era energy restrictions and building a pipeline alongside a carbon capture system should a private proponent come forward. . . .
