The Sask Party government is taking away existing health benefits from workers in wildfire and emergency management, and reducing their employment security options. ​

Recently, the provincial government created a new Crown, the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency. Wildfire and emergency management employees – including wildland firefighters and workers who manage environmental disasters such as floods – will be transferred to this new agency in 2019. As a result, a new bargaining unit will be created and wildfire and emergency management employees will be required to negotiate a new collective agreement, including a new benefits package.​

With a smaller bargaining unit – and one that will include a larger proportion of seasonal workers – they won’t be able to negotiate a benefits package that is equal to the one they currently have.

This means that 600 workers and their families will lose their existing health benefits.

These workers will also have fewer employment security options, as their ability to move to another job in the event of layoffs will be limited to within the new agency, and not in other areas of government.
