MESSAGE FROM JOHN MAYBA AT PEACE TRAIN
This message is to gauge interest in joining together on another peace train to Ottawa this year. I have been talking to VIA RAIL about availability of spaces on the Canadian Train from Vancouver to Toronto in late October or early November 2026.
At this time there is good availability for berths and cabins. Based on information today, we could have double the numbers as the 2024 train (possibly 80 people.) The longer planning period for this possible project will allow us to expand our networking and build on the relationships we have made over the last two years.
The total trip including the train trip, time in Ottawa, and return by air would be about 10 days.
Current rates per person for the train are about $1500 for a berth and $3000 for a cabin. We would try to find billets in Toronto and Ottawa. It would be possible to join the train anywhere along the route subject to space available.

She practices pediatrics in Whitehorse, Yukon, where she founded and leads Lynx Health, an innovative, team-based model of care designed to improve access and outcomes for children and families in northern and rural communities. Her clinical work focuses on child development, mental health and supporting marginalized children and families. She has held numerous leadership roles, including President of the Yukon Medical Association, and has served on national boards advancing child health and healthcare innovation. She brings both a prairie perspective and a national voice to her work, grounded in the belief that Canada’s healthcare system reflects our shared values—and our shared responsibility to ensure it remains strong for future generations.
Following the lecture, Katharine will engage in a conversation with Professor Gregory Marchildon. Some time is being reserved for questions from the audience.

Dr. Smart is a pediatrician, national healthcare leader, and a respected Canadian voice on the future of healthcare. Born and raised in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Dr. Smart is the former President of the Canadian Medical Association, where she led the profession through the COVID-19 pandemic and helped shape national dialogue on healthcare sustainability, equity, and system transformation. She practices pediatrics in Whitehorse, Yukon, where she founded and leads Lynx Health, an innovative, team-based model of care designed to improve access and outcomes for children and families in northern and rural communities. Her clinical work focuses on child development, mental health and supporting marginalized children and families. She has held numerous leadership roles, including President of the Yukon Medical Association, and has served on national boards advancing child health and healthcare innovation. She brings both a prairie perspective and a national voice to her work, grounded in the belief that Canada’s healthcare system reflects our shared values—and our shared responsibility to ensure it remains strong for future generations.
Following the lecture, Katharine will engage in a conversation with Professor Gregory Marchildon. Some time is being reserved for questions from the audience.
