Tracking the Carney government’s environmental deregulation

October 2026 - ECOJUSTICE

EXCERPT: "A running list of the federal government's legislative changes and funding cuts

Since Mark Carney was sworn in as Prime Minister of Canada in March 2025, the federal government has championed the slogan “Build Canada Strong.” While the official stance has focused on streamlining major infrastructure projects and decoupling Canada’s economy from the United States, the reality has been an onslaught of funding cuts and legislative overhauls.

The federal government is dismantling Canada’s environmental safety net to benefit powerful, often foreign-owned, industries — fossil fuel giants, mining corporations, and chemical manufacturers — while gutting the laws and funding initiatives designed to help Canada reach its climate targets and ensure a healthy environment and sustainable future for all.

Below we’re keeping track of the legislative changes and funding cuts made by Carney’s federal government.
