In a surprise announcement this afternoon, Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Paul Davis announced that the premiers are asking the federal government to finally step up to the plate and cover at least 25 per cent of all health care spending by the provinces and territories.

As the premiers convene for the Council of the Federation next week in Newfoundland and Labrador next week, the Council of Canadians is available to comment on the need to negotiate a new health accord and restore $36 billion in health care cuts scheduled to come into full effect after this fall’s federal election. Almost $1 billion has already been cut since the accord expired in 2014.
