by Maude Barlow (To be) Published September 19, 2016

Passionate and cogent, this could be the most important book of the year for Canadians

We are complacent. We bask in the idea that Canada holds 20% of the world’s fresh water — water crises face other countries, but not ours. We could not be more wrong. In Boiling Point, bestselling author and activist Maude Barlow lays bare the issues facing Canada’s water reserves, including long-outdated water laws, unmapped and unprotected groundwater reserves, agricultural pollution, industrial-waste dumping, boil-water advisories, and the effects of deforestation and climate change. This will be the defining issue of the coming decade, and most of us have no idea that it is on our very own doorstep.

Barlow is one of the world’s foremost water activists and she has been on the front lines of the world’s water crises for the past 20 years. She has seen first-hand the scale of the water problems facing much of the world, but also many of the solutions that are being applied. In Boiling Point, she brings this wealth of experience and expertise home to craft a compelling blueprint for Canada’s water security.

Reviews

“An insane road trip to the Canadian water apocalypse courtesy of the corporate forces of ignorance and greed, and a blueprint for a rational, prosperous and dignified future by the visionary prophet of democracy and sustainability.” — Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

“Maude Barlow is one of our planet’s greatest water defenders. In this indispensable book, she brings her hard-won wisdom home, demonstrating that Canada is already in the midst of our own water crisis. With great warmth and precision, she also shows that by taking up the call for ‘water justice’ — so intimately connected to other struggles — we can start to build the society we want. This book has all the facts, forceful analysis, and moral clarity that Canadians will need to wake up and join this most urgent of struggles.” — Naomi Klein, author of This Changes Everything and The Shock Doctrine

ECW, the publisher of the book, highlights, "In Boiling Point, bestselling author and activist Maude Barlow lays bare the issues facing Canada’s water reserves, including long-outdated water laws, unmapped and unprotected groundwater reserves, agricultural pollution, industrial-waste dumping, boil-water advisories, and the effects of deforestation and climate change. She also crafts a compelling blueprint for Canada’s water security. Water scarcity will be the defining issue of the coming decade, and most of us have no idea that it is on our very own doorstep."

To help share the message of the book, Barlow will be on a cross-country tour, including in the following communities:

• Ottawa (Centretown United Church) - September 20
• Kingston (Queen's University) - September 21
• Guelph (Harcourt United Church) - September 22 - in conversation with Arlene Slocombe of Wellington Water Watchers
• Toronto (Trinity-St. Paul’s United Church) - September 23 - in conversation with Sarah Harmer
• Vancouver (Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral) - September 29 - in conversation with David Suzuki
• Winnipeg (McNally Robinson Atrium) - November 24

Public forums are also being organized for Barrie (November 7) and Chilliwack (November 21). In addition, book-signing events are now being planned in Calgary (September 30), Belleville (October 3), St. John's (October 14-16), Saskatoon (October 18), Windsor (November 2) and Halifax (November 10).

Boiling Point is Barlow's 18th book and a must-read.

Naomi Klein says, “Maude Barlow is one of our planet’s greatest water defenders. In this indispensable book, she brings her hard-won wisdom home, demonstrating that Canada is already in the midst of our own water crisis. With great warmth and precision, she also shows that by taking up the call for ‘water justice’ — so intimately connected to other struggles — we can start to build the society we want. This book has all the facts, forceful analysis, and moral clarity that Canadians will need to wake up and join this most urgent of struggles.”

Barlow's book tour is being launched at the same time as our new Every lake, every river campaign [ https://secure.canadians.org/ea-action/ ... n.id=52987 ]. This campaign calls on the Trudeau government to immediately and fully restore the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, the Fisheries Act and the Navigable Waters Protection Act (currently the Navigation Protection Act) to their 2012 standards until new and stronger laws are in effect. The tour will also be supporting a declaration that calls on individuals to pledge to boycott Nestle bottled water. That transnational is now applying to the Ontario government for a continued water-taking permit in Aberfoyle and a water-testing permit in Elora.

Please buy your copy of the book from an independent bookseller (they will also be on hand to sell the book at our public events). You can also pre-order the book directly from the publisher here: [ http://ecwpress.com/products/boiling-point ]

Media Release September 19, 2016

(. . . watch for additional tour stops across Canada this Fall)

Ottawa – Canada’s leading water expert is embarking on a 14-city coast-to-coast tour to launch her new book just as Parliament resumes, starting in Ottawa tomorrow. In Boiling Point: Government Neglect, Corporate Abuse, and Canada’s Water Crisis (ECW Press, September 2016), Maude Barlow lays bare the extent of Canada’s water crisis and argues water policies will become the defining issue of the next decade.

Barlow’s new book – her 18th – is a timely and insightful guide for Members of Parliament, environmental organizations and residents seeking to protect freshwater in Canada and in Indigenous communities.

“The water crisis is at our door here in Canada. All the issues we thought so far away are upon us now,” writes Barlow in Boiling Point. “It is time to abandon our false beliefs that Canada has unlimited supplies of water, that Canadians have taken care of this water heritage and one another or that we still have lots of time to do so. We need a strong, national plan of action based on a new water ethic that puts water protection and water justice at the heart of all our policies and laws.”

In June, the Trudeau government announced it would be reviewing environmental and freshwater protections gutted by the former Harper government. This past week the federal government announced public consultations about environmental assessment processes in 19 cities, beginning the same day that Barlow launches her new book.

One of the world’s foremost water activists, Maude Barlow has been on the front lines of the planet’s water crises for the past 20 years. An expert on the subject, she has worked with governments and organizations around the world to protect this precious resource.

“Maude Barlow is one of our planet’s greatest water defenders,” says Naomi Klein, author of This Changes Everything and The Shock Doctrine. “This book has all the facts, forceful analysis, and moral clarity that Canadians will need to wake up and join this most urgent of struggles.”

Barlow is the national chairperson of the Council of Canadians and Washington-based Food and Water Watch, a councillor for the World Future Council, a board member for a number of influential organizations and has previously acted as Senior Advisor on Water to the 63rd President of the UN General Assembly. Her work has earned her impressive 14 honorary doctorates and numerous awards and recognitions.

Boiling Point: Government Neglect, Corporate Abuse, and Canada’s Water Crisis is being released today by ECW Press. Copies for journalists are available upon request. -30-
