Barlow launches 14-city Boiling Point book tour on Sept. 20

Council of Canadians chairperson Maude Barlow's newest book, Boiling Point: Government Neglect, Corporate Abuse, and Canada’s Water Crisis, will be available in bookstores as of September 19. [ http://ecwpress.com/products/boiling-point ]

To help share the message of the book, Barlow will be on a cross-country tour, including in the following communities:

Barlow's book tour is being launched at the same time as our new Every lake, every river campaign [ https://secure.canadians.org/ea-action/ ... n.id=52987 ]. This campaign calls on the Trudeau government to immediately and fully restore the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, the Fisheries Act and the Navigable Waters Protection Act (currently the Navigation Protection Act) to their 2012 standards until new and stronger laws are in effect. The tour will also be supporting a declaration that calls on individuals to pledge to boycott Nestle bottled water. That transnational is now applying to the Ontario government for a continued water-taking permit in Aberfoyle and a water-testing permit in Elora.

Ottawa – Canada’s leading water expert is embarking on a 14-city coast-to-coast tour to launch her new book just as Parliament resumes, starting in Ottawa tomorrow. In Boiling Point: Government Neglect, Corporate Abuse, and Canada’s Water Crisis (ECW Press, September 2016), Maude Barlow lays bare the extent of Canada’s water crisis and argues water policies will become the defining issue of the next decade.

Barlow’s new book – her 18th – is a timely and insightful guide for Members of Parliament, environmental organizations and residents seeking to protect freshwater in Canada and in Indigenous communities.

“The water crisis is at our door here in Canada. All the issues we thought so far away are upon us now,” writes Barlow in Boiling Point. “It is time to abandon our false beliefs that Canada has unlimited supplies of water, that Canadians have taken care of this water heritage and one another or that we still have lots of time to do so. We need a strong, national plan of action based on a new water ethic that puts water protection and water justice at the heart of all our policies and laws.”

In June, the Trudeau government announced it would be reviewing environmental and freshwater protections gutted by the former Harper government. This past week the federal government announced public consultations about environmental assessment processes in 19 cities, beginning the same day that Barlow launches her new book.

One of the world’s foremost water activists, Maude Barlow has been on the front lines of the planet’s water crises for the past 20 years. An expert on the subject, she has worked with governments and organizations around the world to protect this precious resource.
