Thirty-nine years ago the Lax Kw’alaams people of Lelu Island said “no” to liquefied natural gas (LNG) development on their ancestral lands. They remain opposed to this day.

Despite this, Petronas, a Malaysian-owned energy company, wants to build the Pacific Northwest LNG terminal in this ecologically sensitive area. Building it would endanger the second-largest salmon run in Canada, with an economic value of $110 million.

Patrick McLaren, a globally renowned geologist, has discovered a rare flora bank – a remnant of the last ice age – in the area. He has warned that LNG supertankers, which would transport natural gas to Asian markets, will disrupt the unique and delicate geological balance. This disruption could destroy the bank.

Earlier this year, more than 130 scientists signed a letter to federal Environment Minister Catherine McKenna, stating the project would have a devastating impact on fish habitat. They argued the environmental regulator disregarded scientific research not financed by Petronas.

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEAA) is now reviewing the project and is expected to release its final report by October 2. The federal cabinet’s decision on the $11.4-billion terminal is also expected at the same time.

Have your say! Please call and tweet Prime Minister Justin Trudeau now.
