NDP, seniors concerned about cost of living after Sask. deficit increase

By Lane Hoffart - Dec 4, 2025 - CJWW

EXCERPT: "The Sask NDP is speaking out after the Government of Saskatchewan has added around $1 billion to the deficit, $813 million of which is going to SaskPower.

Seniors living on fixed incomes are worried that the money added to the deficit will be paid off by an increase in their power bills.

Darcy Warrington, NDP MLA for Saskatoon-Stonebridge, says the additional funding for SaskPower will more than likely result in increased power bills across the province, hitting those on smaller incomes the hardest.

“We’re really concerned that on fixed incomes, people shouldn’t have to get a second job, people shouldn’t have to be asking friends and family for money, or moving, not only out of the neighbourhood but out of the city in order to afford the life that they deserve.” . . . . "

REPLY: NDP, seniors concerned about cost of living after Sask. deficit increase

Thank you to the NDP caucus, and especially to Darcy Warrington, for quickly arranging the press conference at Jean Carroll's home this morning.

The CJWW report is pretty good. Let's hope for even better coverage with CBC SK.

In answer to a CBC question, Darcy alluded to the NDP's alternative plan for power generation in the province. He mentioned wind, solar, geothermal and "even nuclear" as part of that mix of alternatives. He failed to mention the quite reasonable prospect of hydro power from Manitoba as another option.

But dare I say, knowing full well that NDP has already endorsed SMRs as part of Sask Power's range of potential sources, could the extremely high debt load that our Crown Corp is facing might be partially caused by the inordinate and unjustifiable investment cost of pursuing the nuclear pipe dream?
