The Council of Canadians found an unofficial anthem in Prince Albert NDP candidate Lon Borgerson’s song “Heave Steve.”

Released on March 28, the song’s music video is gaining national attention after Council of Canadians chairperson Maude Barlow encouraged members to show the video at each tour stop this election season.

Borgerson “hit the nail on the head” with Heave Steve, national Council of Canadians board member and Prince Albert resident Rick Sawa said.

“The criticisms he makes of the Conservatives and Harper are the same ones we make.”

Although Sawa clarifies that the Council of Canadians is a non-partisan organization, they’re in agreement with Borgeron’s sentiment; “We’ve got to heave Steve,” he said, noting that their agreement would have been the same if Borgerson were a Green or a Liberal Party member.

“One thing we are certain is that we want to get rid of the one person government, which is why we feel that what is in,” Sawa said.

“We’ve been against the Harper government since they got into power.”

As a non-partisan entity, Sawa said that there’s no holding back what membership has to say -- stark contrast to partisan groups wherein, “You hear something you don’t like, you keep your mouth shut.”

“We look at the actions of a party -- the policies of a party,” Sawa said. “We just tell it like it is, and I don’t think we’re well-liked in some corners.”

One of these corners is Prince Albert MP Randy Hoback’s, whose re-election campaign is gearing up for a busy summer.

Knocking on doors will be key through the summer, Hoback said, noting that his team is already lined up and ready to follow their re-election game plan.

“I’m really happy to see that people are following it, and not only the issues in it but the humour as well,” Borgerson said, noting that as of Monday it surpassed 10,000 views.

“The song isn’t overtly partisan in terms of the NDP -- it raises concerns with the harper government but I think it resonates with a bunch of groups.”
