The Council of Canadians Ottawa chapter is planning to greet 'Walk 4 PR' when it arrives on Parliament Hill on Monday May 29 at 5 pm as a way to continue to put pressure on the Liberal government to move forward on proportional representation.

The 'Walk for PR' website explains, "To keep a spotlight on this important national issue, we will walk 200 km from Kingston to Ottawa. ...We'll arrive at a late afternoon assembly at Parliament Hill in Ottawa on Monday May 29th, two days before the vote to endorse the work of the Special Committee on Electoral Reform is expected to take place."

While people are being encouraged to join for portions of the walk, the entirety of the walk will be done by 75-year-old Fair Vote Toronto activist Ron Weigand.

The Kingston Whig-Standard reports, "Once in Ottawa on May 29 Weigand will pick up more walkers and head to Parliament Hill. There they'll be met by former NDP leader Ed Broadbent, NDP member of Parliament for Skeena-Bulkley Valley Nathan Cullen, Green Party leader Elizabeth May and environmental activist and scientist David Suzuki. Upon our arrival, we will be met by supportive members of parliament, including at a minimum Elizabeth May and Nathan Cullen."

During the October 2015 federal election campaign, the Liberals explicitly promised: "We will make every vote count. We are committed to ensuring that 2015 will be the last federal election conducted under the first-past-the-post voting system. We will convene an all-party Parliamentary committee to review a wide variety of reforms, such as ranked ballots, proportional representation, mandatory voting, and online voting. This committee will deliver its recommendations to Parliament. Within 18 months of forming government, we will introduce legislation to enact electoral reform."

But by February 1, 2017, despite this very clear election promise, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau ruled out electoral reform.

As noted above, a vote on electoral reform is scheduled to take place in the House of Commons on May 31. Council of Canadians chapters and allies across the country are demanding that their Liberal MP vote for electoral reform.
