Take action to stop Bill C-51

May 19, 2015 - 10:48 am

It may seem like the fight to stop Bill C-51 has run its course since it recently passed in the House of Commons, but it's not a done deal yet.

There's still time to prevent the secret police bill from becoming law by either stopping it or stalling it in the Senate. You can help build pressure on the Senate, by taking a moment to contact your Senator(s) through email or social media, here:
[ ]

So far 9 Senators have oppose the bill, 3 support it and 70 are undecided. It doesn't happen often, but there are precedents for the Senate amending bills and sending them back to the House of Commons or rejecting them outright. Public pressure can increase the possibility of this happening with C-51.

There is another day of action building momentum for May 30, including a rally on Parliament hill in Ottawa, as well as protests in London, Calgary, Toronto, Vancouver, Kitchener-Waterloo, Edmonton, Sudbury, Halifax, Regina, Barrie, Winnipeg, and Montreal. Details are available here: [ ]

The fight to stop reckless Bill C-51 has reached a crucial stage: the final vote in the Senate is expected within days.

A number of senators have spoken out against Bill C-51 over the past week, including B.C. Senator Mobina Jaffer who said on local radio that "this bill will not keep us safe, but is just a rhetoric that will divide us".1

A growing number are saying that they will vote against it - but most have remained silent.2 This Saturday, grassroots rallies are taking place across Canada, including a National Convergence to Stop C-51 on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. [ ]

You can find your event here now.

Events are happening in Ottawa, Barrie, Calgary, Courtenay, Edmonton, Halifax, London, Montreal, Regina, Sudbury, Toronto, Vancouver, Victoria, and Winnipeg - plus one today in Kitchener-Waterloo. Find the event closest to you on the website. [ ]

In these vital final hours, please make sure you also use our tool to contact your senators and forward the action to your friends to ramp up the pressure before the final vote.

We need to stop this. The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) have confirmed that Bill C-51 violates the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, both of which Canada has ratified.3

This pressure is why Prime Minister Harper is trying to force Senators to rubber-stamp the bill quickly so he can get it passed before Parliament breaks for the summer.

Will you be there on Saturday to show that people want our senators to take their role as the chamber for sober second thought seriously? Check out the links on the website to learn more and find your local event.

Let’s keep up the pressure, Canada!

David, on behalf of your OpenMedia team

P.S. So far, 15 Senators oppose the bill, 5 support and 62 are undecided or undeclared. We know that senators are feeling the heat from Canadians - be sure to keep up the pressure and contact your local senators before it's too late. [ ]
