EXCERPT: "Pierre Poilievre wants to remain in the dark. At least that’s what he’s doing by continuing to refuse the top-secret security clearance required to read classified government documents. . . .

Whether in the House of Commons or in speeches around the country, the Conservative leader employs a slashing, accusative approach castigating his opponent — until now Prime Minister Justin Trudeau — that is built around perceived public grievances but is not always closely associated with fact. . . . ."

Final Countdown for Pierre Poilievre To Do the Right Thing And Get His Security Clearance

March 20, 2025

OTTAWA – It’s the eleventh-hour and Pierre Poilievre still procrastinates on getting Top Secret security clearance. The Green Party of Canada calls on the Conservative leader to put concerns about his foreign connections to rest.

All other federal party leaders have sought and received Top Secret security clearance. Only Poilievre has refused. That means only he can eliminate any suggestion that he may be compromised. If he refuses to seek clearance before the election, Canadians will never know the truth. If he becomes Prime Minister, he will receive it automatically—without ever having to answer critical questions.

While the potential financial conflicts involving other political figures get headlines, the Green Party is more concerned with whether Pierre Poilievre owes favours to Narendra Modi and the Indian government. Given the redacted findings on the Conservative Party leadership race in the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians (NSICOP) report on foreign interference, Canadians deserve full transparency.

“The reality is simple: If Pierre Poilievre becomes Prime Minister, he will receive Top Secret security clearance automatically—regardless of whether there are concerns about foreign influence,” said Green Party Co-Leader Elizabeth May. “That is why he must go through the vetting process now, before the election. If he has nothing to hide, why delay?”

The Green Party urges Mr. Poilievre to undergo the security clearance review and prove to Canadians that there are no hidden connections that could compromise his leadership.

“It’s important for Canadians to have confidence in their leaders,” added Green Party Co-Leader Jonathan Pedneault. “Security clearance is not automatic—it must be earned. If Mr. Poilievre refuses to go through the process, it raises understandable questions about why he is choosing not to.”

With questions about foreign interference lingering, the Green Party believes it is in the national interest for all major party leaders to go through this process voluntarily. Poilievre has two days to do the right thing.

The Green Party of Canada is committed to transparency, democracy, and protecting Canada’s sovereignty from foreign interference. We advocate for a cleaner environment, a just society, and a stronger, more accountable democracy.
