Still Haunted by the Edmund Fitzgerald - 50th Anniversary Tribute
Charlie Angus / The Resistance - November 7, 2025
EXCERPT: "In many ways, the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald is an American story. After all, the big ship was, as Gordon Lightfoot said, “the pride of the American side.”
On its final voyage, the Fitzgerald was heading out from a loading dock in Wisconsin to a mill in Cleveland. But Lightfoot’s epic anthem, The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, plays into the Canadian psyche — especially those who grew up near the waters of the world’s great freshwater sea.
It’s interesting that the American tragedy was immortalized by Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot, and that another song about the Great Lakes tragedy, White Squall, was written by fellow Canadian, Stan Rogers.
Both songs warn about the need to treat the lakes with immense respect. And both songs remind us that despite Trump and the MAGA war on the Canadian people, our nations have shared stories and a shared geography in the immensity of the Great Lakes. The sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald is one of those shared moments. . . . ."
