News Release - April 22, 2009

The Government of Saskatchewan is showing its support today for men and women serving in the Canadian Armed Forces. All vehicles in the government fleet will soon display decals that read "Support our Troops," a reminder that Canadian soldiers serve selflessly in missions around the world.

"Our government wants to honour and respect the heroic contributions of our troops," Government Services Minister Dan D'Autremont said. "Recently, we announced the Scholarships of Honour for returning veterans and their children, and now we want to make a more general display of support."

The "Support our Troops" decals were designed specifically for the provincial government, incorporating the symbolic yellow ribbon with green from the Saskatchewan flag, the Saskatchewan Coat of Arms and a red maple leaf.

"This initiative is another example of the tremendous support that the Canadian Forces and Land Force Western Area soldiers continue to receive from the government and the people of Saskatchewan," Commander of Land Force Western Area, Brigadier-General Mike Jorgensen said. "I cannot begin to tell you what it means to those soldiers deployed or in training to deploy, and to their families, and I thank the government and people of Saskatchewan again for their continued, heart-felt efforts on behalf of Canadian soldiers."

A ceremony was held at the Legislative Building grounds to acknowledge the contribution of Saskatchewan military. Master Corporal Neil Bird of the Royal Regina Rifles and Wood River MLA Yogi Huyghebaert placed the first decal on a CVA vehicle.

Decals on public vehicles

April 22, 2009

To the Editor, Regina Leader Post –

Ever eager to please Mr. Harper, now Mr. Wall is going to stick “Support Our Troops” decals on our public vehicles.

The last time I checked the polls, the majority of Canadians support our troops – by bringing them home from the illegal war in Afghanistan – Bush’s way of protecting American oil interests there!

Furthermore, it is unacceptable for public vehicles to carry any political message, let alone one that promotes the views of the federal governing party.

Is Mr. Wall really that desperate for Harper’s approval that he would stoop to this distasteful measure!?

Is the Sask Party getting ready to go down with Harper’s sinking ship!?
