WEDNESDAY MAY 20, NOON: RALLY FOR HUMAN RIGHTS IN CANADA—WE MUST DO BETTER, IN FRONT OF HOTEL SASK, 2125 VICTORIA AVE
Federal, Provincial, and Territorial officials from the Committee Responsible for Human Rights in Canada are meeting in Regina for a forum on human rights and to review how Canada is doing.
We need to let them know what the reality is here—with unhoused people, trans youth, disabled people, and MMIW2S people. In addition, Canada is participating in genocide in Palestine; condoning the US invasion of Venezuela, as well as wars globally; and investing in more armaments and the military.
Let’s make our voices heard and show up with signs and our voices calling for Canada to live up to its human rights commitments.

“CHECKPOINT” is a deeply personal auto-ethnographic play that reflects my own journey of growing up in the Middle East and eventually building a life in Canada. The play follows my main character as she cares for her father, who is battling dementia, prompting her to revisit memories of her homeland. Through this process, she seeks to answer critical questions: Why do we need to know where we are from? What is home without land? This one-woman show weaves together stories from Palestine, Lebanon, Jordan, Russia, and Israel. It is a story born from my own experiences, hopes, and struggles—an attempt to preserve my cultural heritage, confront difficult truths, and find pathways toward healing and reconciliation.”

For example, housing is a human right. However, over 100,000 people in Canada are unhouse and that figure may be grossly underestimated because the number of hidden homeless people is unknown.

The Native Brotherhood was formed in Saskatchewan Penitentiary in 1964. Produced under the eyes of censors, their newsletter captures the power of brotherhood, culture, identity, and prisoner advocacy just as the crisis of Indigenous over-incarceration was beginning to take hold. The exhibit features writing produced by prisoners in the 1960s and 1970s, and artwork produced by men currently incarcerated at Saskatchewan Penitentiary. Light refreshments will be served.
